  54. DESCRIPTION
  55.  
  56.      Emacs is a very powerful, but sometimes cryptic, text editor. Its
  57.      basic features are similar to those of the MEmacs editor which
  58.      comes with AmigaDOS (in the Tools directory), but has numerous
  59.      other facilities:
  60.  
  61.      - unlimited undo.
  62.      - language specific editing, with automatic (re)indentation.
  63.      - a dialect of lisp as extension language, leading to extreme 
  64.        reconfigurability.
  65.      - abbreviations for commonly typed words.
  66.      - complete on-line manual.
  67.      - powerful search & replace facilities (including wildcards).
  68.      - direct mail and news reading ability
  69.      - everything you could every desire in an editor and some of what
  70.        you'd like in a good OS
  71.  
  72. NEW FEATURES
  73.  
  74.      Since the previous release (1.26), the major change has been to
  75.      move to emacs-19.25.  Emacs-19 has many new features and
  76.      optimizations.  Many of the new lisp packages require Emacs-19.
  77.  
  78. OLD FEATURES
  79.  
  80.      - menus, mouse, clipboard, rexx and workbench support.
  81.      - public screen support
  82.      - For the most part, it's working "good enough" --- I'm using for most
  83.        everything.  I havn't, however, deleted 18 from my disk yet ;).

  85. MISSING EMACS-19 FEATURES
  86.  
  87.      - multiple "frames" (what emacs calls windows) support.
  88.      - fonts/faces (emacs does support choice of *one* font)
  89.      - mouse support isn't completely Emacs-19 compliant.

  91. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  92.  
  93.      - AmigaDOS 2.04
  94.      - At least 2MB of memory (emacs uses about 750k + memory for the
  95.        files being edited).
  96.      - 5MB of free disk space for the binary version, 20MB for the 
  97.        source version (but you can remove some of the files once it
  98.        has been installed).  If you want to build it, don't even
  99.        ask...
  100.      - Emacs works with a 68000 (A500,A2000), but is a bit slow. It is
  101.        very pleasant to use with a 68030/25MHz ...
  102.  
  103. KNOWN BUGS
  104.  
  105.      - exec-path just doesn't seem to work right.  Some things that
  106.        call external programs won't find them.  Sometimes there is a
  107.        way around as in vc-path for vc.  However, anything you put in
  108.        gnuemacs:etc (an extra assign to gnuemacs-19.25) will be found
  109.        as will anything in s: I honestly havn't figured this one out
  110.        yet.
  111.      - "vm" creates buffers with *huge* filenames.  The format is uses
  112.        to generate a buffer name from a "forwarded" buffer puts in a
  113.        colon.  This causes a lockup.  This may be true for other
  114.        buffer names with a colon.
  115.      - I havn't tested menus yet.  I am told someone has munged the
  116.        menus to work just like other v19 menus.  Someone should verify
  117.        this.
  118.      - clipboard interaction doesn't work exactly as expected.  If you
  119.        cut from some other app, then use kill-region, then use yank
  120.        followed by yank-pop, you don't get what you cut.
  121.      - Some issues with env-vars remain.  Emacs keeps internal copy
  122.        which may not be appropriate on the Amiga.  I havn't decided
  123.        how to hack this up yet.
  124.      - It seem inexplicably slightly slower in screen movement from
  125.        the 18 port.  May be due to creaping featureism.
